The department of Telecommunications has postponed the impending mobile spectrum auction in the 1800 MHz and the premium 900 MHz categories. The auction will now take place on the 3rd of February. The bidding time has also been extended till January 15th. The delay is due to the demand of more time from the bidders and also to formulate strategy on the irksome Spectrum Usage Charges issue. The industry is demanding either scrapping of or the fixing at a uniform 3 or 5 per cent. Earlier auction notice put it at an ambiguous 3-8%. The government hopes to raise around 11,300 crores through this session of auction.
This particular auction will be crucial for Airtel and Vodafone companies, according to industry sources.
