A fierce battle has been raging over the recent Supreme Court verdict re-validating the controversial Section 377 of the IPC which criminalizes gay and lesbian relationships. Retired judiciaries also have openly questioned the Two Judge panel with opposing views finally terming homosexuality a crime. Civil society at large and artists, literary persons particularly, came out to defend the right of the individual in choosing his sexual orientation. With the young scions of Congress too defending the cause of the minority, the central government too filed a review petition in the Supreme Court today seeking re-examination of the recent judgement.
Amidst all the din, respected news magazine India Today came out with a most eloquent poster on the topic in it’s recent issue. Celebrated writer Vikram Seth, who is a Padma Shri awardee and globally recognized for his works like “A Suitable Boy”, “An Equal Music” etc, figures in the cover page, standing like a criminal holding a slate saying ‘Not a Criminal’! Vikram Seth since long has acknowledged his bisexual nature and has been a vocal participant in the fight for LGBT rights.
It should also be noted that Seth is the son of Justice Leila Seth, first woman Chief Justice of India.
