Just as the film lovers across the nation are mourning the loss of Farooq Sheikh, news of veteran actress Suchitra Sen’s illness is coming through. The yesteryear bengali-hindi actress has had a glorious career of around 25 years from 50s through 70s. Born Rama Dasgupta, in present Bangladesh, Sen started her career “Shesh Kothaay” in 1952. She acted opposite legends like Uttam Kumar, Soumitro Chatterjee and many others. Her first film in Hindi was Bimal Roy’s “Devdas” opposite Dilip Kumar in 1955. She had won best actress award at Moscow International Film Festival in 1961, the first time ever for an Indian actress.
Her daughter Moonmoon Sen, grand daughters Raima and Ria are also actors.
Suchitra’s last role was in 1978 in “Pronoy Pasha” opposite Soumitro Chatterjee. She had been leading a life of a social recluse since then, except for philanthropic activity with Ramakrishna Mission.
